It’s the first year of that generation 5 series. As with most first year cars, there will be issues/quirks. That being said, the car is gorgeous. We worked on a ā€˜17 5 series a few months ago and it really is a nicely built and optioned vehicle. I wouldn’t mind owning one if I had the budget for the upkeep of such vehicle. How Reliable Is the 2014 BMW 5 Series? The 5 Series has a reliability score of three out of five circles from J.D. Power and Associates. That's not very competitive for a luxury brand. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Lexus GS, and Audi A6 are among the models that best the 5 Series in reliability. BMWs are generally reliable (minus certain/mostV8 models). My concern with used ones is the maintenance cost (especially if you are financing anyway). Generally, I recommend budgeting $1200 per year for maintenance as some years it will be $200 and some years it will be $3000. Plus if something ā€œbreaksā€ it will definitely be a $1000 repair Based on RepairPal’s recent reliability surveys, Audi has scored 3.0 out of 5.0. This puts it on even ground with Mercedes (also 3.0 out of 5.0). And, above BMW (just 2.5 out of 5.0). When pitting it side by side against other auto brands, Audi ranked 28th out of 32 automakers that took part in that survey.

Mind you however to pay attention to the 168 horsepower models because they are 2.2 in-line 6-cylinder engines. 523i M52 of 168 horsepower – Quite an rare presence on the BMW 5 Series E39, the classic 523i is a 6-cylinder symphony, but it suffers from the general problem of petrol engines on this model. Not great, not terrible.

Toyota makes great cars. The problem is that you bought two BMWs with the least reliable BMW engines. It’s well documented that the N54 I6 and the N63 V8 are both garbage in terms of reliability. The N52 (328i, 528i) and N55 (f10 535i, X5 35i) are far more solid engines (but not perfect) in terms of reliability.
