Introduction. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM was introduced back in June 1993. Price-wise it sits in-between the extremely expensive EF 50mm f/1.2 USM L and the "cheap" EF 50mm f/1.8 II. There have been calls in forums out there that the lens is outdated by now (e.g. due to the non-circular aperture) but so far Canon had different priorities.

A long-discontinued Canon EF 50mm f/1.0 L Lens is available for an extremely high price on the used market, but the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens was the best 50mm lens available new prior to the 50 f/1.2's release.
